While there are a LOT of delightful PROS, there are plenty of CONS as well...</span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
...Here are the 7 worst things about being a reenactor:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMk-796cCj-FgeLzgqtFcYU8-lnLP3klP7x9pbctxyquxANbuQ2gxtA7NzrT4jL_bSC_FsnAGmV2GNY_0Bd777_-Wxj2-h5AnaxID6G6R6KYdybiwyNuvyVZ_nOaZmXrp6SvzQv8dg2Nk/s1600/557025_4288319607546_2077463154_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMk-796cCj-FgeLzgqtFcYU8-lnLP3klP7x9pbctxyquxANbuQ2gxtA7NzrT4jL_bSC_FsnAGmV2GNY_0Bd777_-Wxj2-h5AnaxID6G6R6KYdybiwyNuvyVZ_nOaZmXrp6SvzQv8dg2Nk/s400/557025_4288319607546_2077463154_n.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="color: orange;">7.) PACKING/UNPACKING</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For a weekend event, I need almost an entire day to cram all my clothing and gear into the car and another day to get it all unpacked when I get home. I'm fortunate in that I have a mini van with a little more space, but even then there's the hassle of dragging the heavy seats out of the back to make room. It can turn a Saturday/Sunday event into a Friday/Saturday/Sunday/Monday event.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHtNiwdWnCERDjaAJ-Ru0TsBHEampLMH8ZSu36un9AtbfwLduP1tOP8NzVrneEd1osQhGMmAauu0uAXqak52aguTz2dgajbOvfZgm2oEvl7Vua9hfDpN8EYUaN3OUYWEOPEhJvE-qUSA8/s1600/306510_294135424034273_1866767138_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHtNiwdWnCERDjaAJ-Ru0TsBHEampLMH8ZSu36un9AtbfwLduP1tOP8NzVrneEd1osQhGMmAauu0uAXqak52aguTz2dgajbOvfZgm2oEvl7Vua9hfDpN8EYUaN3OUYWEOPEhJvE-qUSA8/s640/306510_294135424034273_1866767138_n.jpg" height="256" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="color: orange;">6.) WEATHER</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Why must it be a thousand degrees outside when you have to wear a wool coat on top of other thick layers of clothing? Why must it begin raining right as it's time for the battle reenactment to start? Or it starts raining right before it's time to start packing your canvas? Or it's crazy cold outside when you didn't pack appropriate clothing for it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fair weather reenactor. I am aware that it was occasionally hot/cold/rainy in the past, but yikes!<br />
<br />
It can only mean one thing... God hates reenactors.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIBGvW8yBF6zeTFYy8OfLk6IVFxcg8ZoRUxQ9-5bC2yb_cGFX9dHN0vay9xRV00ha6tOeBx_Z3Fh6VQWqs6rLcmoWC1PS9zmlW_rg7rL2z2lMnkM7KRBUCjovb-I1c3S8Wh34izO60APU/s1600/Picture+3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIBGvW8yBF6zeTFYy8OfLk6IVFxcg8ZoRUxQ9-5bC2yb_cGFX9dHN0vay9xRV00ha6tOeBx_Z3Fh6VQWqs6rLcmoWC1PS9zmlW_rg7rL2z2lMnkM7KRBUCjovb-I1c3S8Wh34izO60APU/s640/Picture+3.png" height="195" width="400" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="color: orange;">5.) STUPID QUESTIONS</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://www.hmsacasta.com/2013/11/7-stupid-things-asked-of-historical.html">We've covered these in a previous post...</a> you know the ones I'm talking about. Don't get me wrong, I love working with the public, but these can wear on a body after repeated application.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOFlS0Chkz7-1RovCizr4S0OYQao-qnHW-m-7DkYaAAwKW4JnzGZR1WI-MKeB-akkbS2ECtVebe1nkNLbsXjGF-4D6li92THo6dCFC4tBH024Qx-oNRUobFOtl3OTY7AaL-wE9aq1wR_0/s1600/national-lampoons-vacation-1024x576.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOFlS0Chkz7-1RovCizr4S0OYQao-qnHW-m-7DkYaAAwKW4JnzGZR1WI-MKeB-akkbS2ECtVebe1nkNLbsXjGF-4D6li92THo6dCFC4tBH024Qx-oNRUobFOtl3OTY7AaL-wE9aq1wR_0/s640/national-lampoons-vacation-1024x576.jpg" height="171" width="400" /></a></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="color: orange;">4.) TRAVEL</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I love seeing new places and attending events at far flung historic sites... but yikes I get tired of the hours in the car! I have worn a hole in the carpet where the heel of my gas foot goes and mashed a dent in my armrest where my elbow sits. I've worn through oil and tires and put a zillion miles on my poor car in the pursuit of my beloved hobby. I know reenactors who have burned up tires, engines and entire cars in their travels. A moment of silence for our four-wheeled friends who have lost their lives in the tireless pursuit of our hobby.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: orange;"><b>3.) THE 'EVENT DIET'</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm the worst about it in the world. I goto an event to present or demo for the public, or with some other agenda, and I'm so busy all weekend that I completely forget to eat or drink. Or it's nasty hot and I'm just too sweaty to even consider food of any sort. Then to compound the problem, when the public leaves there's a rum ration issued to the unit or an adult beverage offered to me on an empty stomach.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Crash starvation + Alcohol = I'm missing colors on Sunday morning</b></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="color: orange;">2.) REENACTOR CLIQUE-ISHNESS</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For some years I labored under the mistaken impression that cliques went away after high school, <i><span style="color: red;"><b>SPOILER ALERT</b></span></i>... they do not. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
North, South, Indians, Slaves, English, French, American, Militia, Army, Navy, Longhunters, Stitch Nazis, Librarians, Farbs, Mainstreamers, Progressives, Old-timers, Spirit of 76ers, Costumers, Steampunks, Quebecois, Western, Performers, Presenters, Demonstrators, Craftsmen, Research hoarders, Doctors and Surgeons, Officers, NCOs, you name it.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the end we're all doing roughly the same thing in our own way, giving the public a glimpse of life in the 'old-timey' days while trying to learn and experience some aspect of history for ourselves. Play nice out there kids!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFWcjiIolZMBpETgj4THE3rGuGfVcgCz16AAGbhS5g3RnNfCC89HDrN8CFPoNCUSi_Q4qR0_Lyapi-HjiZX_2GFxHHV33qomCb-gd-8FKEdX6SLxJErYVmn_r2hTKPxI2Rwp9upB-dDV4/s1600/Screen+Shot+2013-11-06+at+5.41.13+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFWcjiIolZMBpETgj4THE3rGuGfVcgCz16AAGbhS5g3RnNfCC89HDrN8CFPoNCUSi_Q4qR0_Lyapi-HjiZX_2GFxHHV33qomCb-gd-8FKEdX6SLxJErYVmn_r2hTKPxI2Rwp9upB-dDV4/s640/Screen+Shot+2013-11-06+at+5.41.13+PM.png" height="200" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: orange;"><b>1.) PORT-A-POTTIES IN PERIOD GARB</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I already don't enjoy using strange toilets. But I REALLY don't enjoy using strange PUBLIC toilets. Then, put that strange public toilet in a cramped, outdoor blue plastic booth while wearing my 'funny clothes'... and it is my ultimate recipe for discomfort. There are so many layers of clothing between you and your eventual goal that it is the least graceful and practical thing you can do at an event. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have been known to avoid port-a-potties like the plague unless I'm just absolutely desperate. And even IF I decide to make use of one, I usually try to use the 'handicapped' potty because they're so much bigger than the regular ones, there's generally enough room to take off and hang up the five layers of clothing between me and the plastic seat. God forbid my clothing be allowed to touch any of the mysterious and fetid fluids that lurk on any and ALL of the potty's surfaces.<br />
<br />
<b><i>Now, a tale that the lovely Mrs. Roberts twisted my arm to make me include. </i></b><br />
<br />
A year or so ago, I was at a nice little event whose name I won't mention (but it rhymes with<a href="http://www.paintedstonesettlers.org/index.html"> 'Long Run Massacre'</a>) and I had avoided the port-o-johns all weekend and finally was beside myself with desperation. So I picked out one that was partially obscured from public by the treeline. At least the event coordinators had made an attempt to hide them a little bit. <br />
<br />
I enter and immediately realize this is going to be an unpleasant visit. The little blue booth was full in the hot afternoon sun and had been baking there for several hours. To make matters worse, it would seem that everyone else had used it before me, leaving it a complete wreck!<br />
<br />
There were no interior hooks for me to hang my waistcoat etc from, so I very carefully folded it up and placed it precariously on a little shelf attached to the exhaust pipe. Then, I very carefully got myself arranged so as to do my duty (as it were). I was mindful the entire time not to allow my breeches to touch the wet floor.<br />
<br />
Once my transaction was complete, I stand to pull up my breeches. But because of the small size of the little potty and the awkward angle at which I had to stand in order to keep my breeches from touching the floor. I was having a hard time. Then the perfect storm occurred, Leather soled period repro boots met slick plastic floor, awkward crouching angle met wonky balancing act center of gravity. I sliped forward and banged my head on the plastic door then fell in a half-clothed crumple onto the wet floor.<br />
<br />
Needless to say, the scream that issued forth from the interior of that little blue hell must have sounded like a middle school girl.<br />

It is the log of the Travels and Adventures of some of the Royal Tars of Old England. The Journal includes biographies of the Crew, details of the Ship herself and the current logs of all her adventures at sea. A fine lot of gentlemen if I do say so myself!<br />

The weather was cool and pleasant with light rain in the early mornings. The company was delightful, with most of my favourite people in attendance. <br />
<br />
Miss Waterman spent her afternoon on Friday in archery practice with her recently acquired bow. She was like a child at Christmas! A good deal of my time on Friday afternoon was spent in conversation with Mr. Cushing upon the topic of his disappointment of a few months back. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoQ9d4vhN9GfXdni-Ioij9lQQaXvL1Eb9vjN9hctLpqVr8CxFtmItkTsdilZSxyDEZ-SsFd_XTCuhokJQLMtZrn8QGB-ixlJH_X0d54IOXZ2bk6qC61iORVMAta81pcmuuYzGx9GFnQs0/s1600/IMG_3575.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoQ9d4vhN9GfXdni-Ioij9lQQaXvL1Eb9vjN9hctLpqVr8CxFtmItkTsdilZSxyDEZ-SsFd_XTCuhokJQLMtZrn8QGB-ixlJH_X0d54IOXZ2bk6qC61iORVMAta81pcmuuYzGx9GFnQs0/s200/IMG_3575.JPG" width="200" /></a></div>On Saturday, Mrs. Cooper held her archery competition for Ladies of quality, at about midday I gave a medical lecture to a full auditorium of publick, then it was on to tea with the Dubbelds under their superb tent. <br />
<br />
Whilst at tea, Miss Waterman stood and offered up a special thanks to everyone there for making her feel so welcome since her arrival last year. Miss Waterman and I also spent some time with the Mudds who brought along their new daughter.<br />
<br />
After the tea, the Tumbuschs held dance instruction under the pavilion. We all danced and laughed. Because Mrs. Wise had to leave early, we had to hold the second half of the ladies archery competition instead of having the second portion on Sunday afternoon<br />
<br />
Mrs. Kannick came in first place with Miss Myers a close second and Miss Waterman in third.<br />

<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhU6wZgnSF8Ad4Nl7YrBYeYf836CffNP5tApdbP0n3Di9lQyvxCRtF-inxQ1dMOhiR1KVxmSz6OHvofeB-vFOZG3eq1nksfIIpEIM_50cmtCqNcR9UpCzGvoYTTs8lYqUjTBIQS6hd15uU/s1600/251320_2089158277360_1497325440_32269472_2739267_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="260" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhU6wZgnSF8Ad4Nl7YrBYeYf836CffNP5tApdbP0n3Di9lQyvxCRtF-inxQ1dMOhiR1KVxmSz6OHvofeB-vFOZG3eq1nksfIIpEIM_50cmtCqNcR9UpCzGvoYTTs8lYqUjTBIQS6hd15uU/s400/251320_2089158277360_1497325440_32269472_2739267_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
For a good many years now, I have not had to do so. I was in His Majesty's Royal Navy aboard the HMS Zealous then later aboard the <a href="http://hmsacasta.blogspot.com/">Acasta</a>, and it t'was all buff and blue and buff and blue. Never once was a moment's thought entered into the idea of what I might wear from day-to-day. Then upon my retirement, I returned home to discover the death of my beloved Isabella and it t'was all black and black.<br />
<br />
Thus, for some years now, I have not had the occasion to give my wardrobe much thought.<br />
<br />
Recently however, I have set out to make a bit of a change. I purchased a pair of <a href="http://smoke-fire.com/1812-clothing-patterns-accessories-2.asp">small fall trousers</a>. Upon their eventual arrival, they required no small bit of alteration as they were positively fit to be worn by my horse, they were so large. The back and legs had to be taken in so that I did not give the appearance of swimming whilst I wore then.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibZ9cROEOJHgVq277bLbLbNtJnPIl3vpvtD5RJmcPnbCBvMylN2GX85gyM05D3UGzLbLDwsfgt20iyYsdAo0Zx-zMBBQ37UDn1fMsFVIWwjBRi9bAv0qqEueY78e46hzNL7gLTOynbOyE/s1600/IMG_2820.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibZ9cROEOJHgVq277bLbLbNtJnPIl3vpvtD5RJmcPnbCBvMylN2GX85gyM05D3UGzLbLDwsfgt20iyYsdAo0Zx-zMBBQ37UDn1fMsFVIWwjBRi9bAv0qqEueY78e46hzNL7gLTOynbOyE/s200/IMG_2820.JPG" width="200" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My new slippers</td></tr>
</tbody></table>Shortly thereafter, I purchased a new pair of shoes to wear to genteel social occasions, to which I am oft invited. My poor feet are so accustom'd to the free feeling of my riding boots, that they felt quite restrain'd by the tight new slippers. My toes especially!<br />
<br />
And to go along with, I have also recently purchased a pattern for a series of different waistcoats and have set about having a nice dark green wool one made. Nothing fancy, as I would not want my transition from black to cause a stir in the community.<br />
<br />
But know also, fair reader, that I have purchased enough material for TWO others. One in a nice light green (as I hold a particular preference for the colour), and one in a blue stripe.<br />
<br />
The newer, light-weight materials shall aid in my keeping cool during this long, southern summer as I travel as well. In July I shall do a good deal of traveling. First I shall be in the <a href="http://www.indianaterritoryfestival.org/">Indiana Territory</a> again along with Spencer's Company of Harrison County Yellow Jackets. There, in that place I shall give a series of my medical lectures to those assembled who might wish to hear.<br />
<br />
Then, the very next week I shall travel southward back to <a href="http://www.jasnalouisville.com/index.html">Locust Grove</a> where there is to be held a great gathering and festivity. There will be excellent opportunities for shopping and visiting with friends that I have not seen for some time.I am looking forward to it.<br />

The heat and the business of the season have conspired to keep me away. Of course, I write this upon the very eve of my travel to Louisville in Kentucky on even more business that will keep me away fro some time as well. I am scheduled to give a medical lecture to the people in those parts in a few days time.<br />
<br />
Until I return, please allow me to share with you some of my rememberances from our recent Nature Walk, held upon the weekend of the 21st of May.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The Doctor and his Daughters</td></tr>
</tbody></table><span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>I</b></span>n anticipation of our upcoming gathering at Bledsoe's Lick, I took the girls out for a 'test' of the nature walk that I have organized. I handed to them the sheets that I shall be passing out to the adult participants in three week's time, and they split off into two groups. Molly and Rose were eager to run off down the trail fifty yards in front of the rest of us. They pick'd leaves and flowers by the fist-full and carried them about with pride, so pleased with themselves each time they thought they had successfully identified one of the plants in question.<br />
<br />
More than once did I have to utter the phrase, <b>"No dear, that's not an Oak leaf, that came from a bush."</b> or <b>"Please don't pick things from so close to the ground."</b> for fear of poison ivy. I also caught them picking the flowers from honey-suckle bushes and sipping the sweet nectar out several times.<br />
<br />
We eventually wandered down the trail and to the old spring where we took turns taking long cool sips from the source. It was cold and pure and the girls drank it up in very indelicate scoops of their hands.<br />
<br />
I was later persuaded to allow them to remove their shoes and stockings so that they might frolick in the cool stream there. They took great pleasure in splashing about and chasing small creatures that make the creek their home. We even managed to catch a very slippery salamander. He was bright red with black spots and the girls were delighted. I held him up by his tail and they took turns touching his little shiny body. After a few minutes, I told the girls that the poor salamander had been very obliging but that he must be terribly confused, so we sent him on his merry way.<br />
<br />
We returned upstream and I instructed the girls to put their shoes back on only to discover that Rose had worn no stockings that day! I scolded her and told her she would ruin her good shoes by the practice.<br />

Miss Waterman has agreed to join us as well as my old Navy friend Capt. Freymann. I have also just received word from Mrs. Jackson that she and her husband will be joining us. She had originally declined my invitation due to some business that they had planned. But I heard back from her on Friday 29 April that their business had been concluded early and that they would indeed join us.<br />
<br />
In all, I believe we shall have about thirteen people in attendance. I am very excited to have my friends all in one place again, and I am especially looking forward to having Miss Waterman out, as I find her company quite stimulating.<br />

If you have perused my journal of late, you may have discover'd my intention to remain 'in character' during my travels for the coming year.<br />
<br />
There is no doubt in my mind that this could be difficult for me, but also for those around me; and I do not wish to alienate any of my friends or compatriots. Things will not be much different, I imagine, than they have been in the past... you've all met the Doctor during YOUR travels, and know the agreeable sort of fellow he can be.<br />
<br />
I want to ask that you all help me to do this by not trying to 'snap me out of it' by mentioning a bunch of modern stuff to me whilst at an event. I believe that enough of you have my email address and are friends with me on various forums, message boards and social networking sites... that any out of character conversation can safely take place there at any time.<br />
<br />
I tell you now that if you attempt to talk to the Doctor about movies, internet, cellphones and the like, he will be terribly confused.<br />
<br />
I daresay I will go one step further and challenge YOU once again to give your interpretation and character some thought this winter. It's no fun if I don't have a few of you to play along!<br />
<br />
Special thanks to everyone that has encouraged me (verbally & otherwise) to do this in the past, I look forward to the additional research that I need to do over the fall and winter to get me where I need to be... and the Doctor looks forward to meeting you in the year to come. This has the potential to be a really fantastic learning experience!<br />
<br />
Allow me to present my compliments to you and yours; and if, in any of your affairs, I can render you any acceptable service, I beg you will use that freedom with which I wish you to command, my friends,<br />
<br />

In addition, if you feel I have left anyone or anything off that should, in your opinion, be added, please feel free to let me know.<br />

Thirteen of my neighbors and friends came out to enjoy the day among the long stone staircase that leads up the hill. We set up in a lovely little shady spot just under an obliging tree<br />

I must endeavour to remember this lesson for our next outing at Bledsoe's Lick and carry only water with us. Although there will no want of the stuff, as there is a famously cool natural spring near the old fort's location.<br />

I hope that the weather will improve and cooperate with us for the event.<br />
<br />
Two days ago I ordered a new pair of Small Fall Trousers, and it is my sincere hope that they arrive before the picnic, although I do not expect that they will. <br />
<br />
There has been a most unexpected change in the weather, cold at night, windy and cloudy during the days. It has made it most unpleasant to be in the outdoors. Additionally, it has kept me from visiting neighbors of late.<br />
<br />

</tbody></table>Whilst cleaning out a desk drawer a few days ago, I discover'd the old letter of introduction writ for me by the hand of my captain aboard the Zealous. Along with it was the medal for my service at the Battle of the Nile, for which my friends are always desirous to have an antic-dote.<br />
<br />
I can tell you, it was all shouting, everyone was shouting, and smoke and fire and blood, so much blood. I remember Cuddy staggered down into the cockpit when the noise above decks had ceased. He was covered from waist to foot in blood... "You are undone!" says I. <br />
<br />
Cuddy was not his jovial self that day, instead soberly says, "Tis not my blood I wear Doctor." <br />
<br />
The Zealous was fortunate in that she and her crew did not receive the number of casualties of the other ships of the British force.<br />
<br />
It is a gruesome tale and not one I wish to recall.<br />

Upon a review of my adventures last year, I have begun to grow excited about my travels in this present year. The girls and I have a good number of places to visit this summer. <i>The following is an account of the plans I have made this far:</i><br />
<br />
In April there will be a gathering of friends for a <a href="http://rsatn.blogspot.com/2010/12/picnic-at-allee.html">Picnic at the Allée</a>. I have it on good authority that my neighbors the Jacksons will be in attendance. Then, in May I have put together a gathering of interested parties to join me in a <a href="http://rsatn.blogspot.com/2011/03/new-events-planned.html">nature walk out at Bledsoe's Lick</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0ZVzojPCUTpvBHkmjU5Msaey8I7olDWG4tcTdXkMvs2Te8kDtb3YRnpChtRHMj45RBhpQLk0XNMxmdl58suy_gAA4JVW-n90tcRJkVmWcRtLrh4XyTrvgVp_voucOxN8TbiCKFecU_8M/s1600/IMG_2235.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0ZVzojPCUTpvBHkmjU5Msaey8I7olDWG4tcTdXkMvs2Te8kDtb3YRnpChtRHMj45RBhpQLk0XNMxmdl58suy_gAA4JVW-n90tcRJkVmWcRtLrh4XyTrvgVp_voucOxN8TbiCKFecU_8M/s400/IMG_2235.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
In June, we will return to <a href="http://www.locustgrove.org/">Locust Grove</a> in Kentucky along the Ohio River for one of my medical lectures. Then it will be on to the <a href="http://www.indianaterritoryfestival.org/">Indiana Territory</a> in July, followed by a <a href="http://www.jasnalouisville.com/index.html">great festival</a> the very next weekend.<br />
<br />
August is quite free. I suspect I will spend my time at home taking care of Birdsall Cottage and keeping up my practice.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGkOEP2CoyJcAHYUI9mxpl3n3UXCy5RMyaZh82XkN-nJqwOrQkavi5mEah5_TETBIGuNeEdBJC4VIxDVTxVQqZVSUYSo5bU0pRwiwjHtH3FG2t66IuxwSPADkLuYqvOpwfEoOKJZveWRA/s1600/IMG_2291.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGkOEP2CoyJcAHYUI9mxpl3n3UXCy5RMyaZh82XkN-nJqwOrQkavi5mEah5_TETBIGuNeEdBJC4VIxDVTxVQqZVSUYSo5bU0pRwiwjHtH3FG2t66IuxwSPADkLuYqvOpwfEoOKJZveWRA/s400/IMG_2291.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />

There will be another great <a href="http://www.fairatnewboston.org/">fair at New Boston</a> during which I will lead a small naturalist expedition into the woods just beyond the site of the fair. Then it will be on to the <a href="http://www.fallslanding.org/">Farnsley-Moremen Estate</a> for more medical lecturing.<br />
<br />
During the final weekend in September, I have been summoned to the <a href="http://www.spiritofvincennes.org/Muster/">Muster</a> that is to take place upon the Wabash in the Indiana Territory, on a bluff that overlooks the Wabash River.<br />
<br />
Then I shall be off to the <a href="http://www.jasnadayton.org/">Ohio country</a> to stay with friends and give a medical lecture to interested parties. I have no doubt that there will be intervening garden parties, dancing and other assorted forms of merriment in the spaces in between.<br />

Therefore, on Thursday of this very week, we instead visited the home of General Daniel Smith at his estate, <a href="http://historicrockcastle.com/">Rock Castle</a>, where we had a glorious picnic on the grounds. Our outdoor dining was followed by a tour of the house.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I was gratified to be able to find things that the girls would eat that would not stain their white dresses. Our picnic consisted of crackers and cheese, grapes and apples and three bottles of juice. The girls ate as though I had never fed them and a grand time was had by all in attendance.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I asked Miss Waterman along, who has been in town on behalf of the Hegwood's for some time now. The poor soul knows no one in Nashville, to my knowledge, and I thought she might enjoy the diversion.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
